Henry of MI stated that the laminate top would be too smooth and not hold the mastic very well in the long run. I happen to agree with this.
The laminate might release sometime and then the tile would also. I would like it more if the table top was not laminated. This way nothing would seperate.
The surface being so smooth and non porus has nothing to hold the mastic.
I think that this would work in the short run, but not in the long. If the table bows or slightly flexes when moving, then the grout or tile would release also.
