Lannie, can you tell us more about where the wood is that you want to lighten? Inside or outside? Is the cedar rough sawn or have that look? Does it look shiny?
For what it's worth, if you have pier and beam construction, the beams under a house are normally dark because they can look "ghostly" in the shade.
