from below, I find the line I want to cut (usually about 1/2" overhang) and push a utility knife through every few feet so I can find that line from above. then from above I lay a hefty straight edge , usually my 6 ft level, along those marks. Then I brace the level with one hand and a knee and cut drawing upward against it with a hook blade knife. makes an easy clean cut for me.
