I recently removed the carpet that covered my stairs and found old pine treds about 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inches thick, some of which had split the entire length of the tred. I would like to maintain wood rather than recarpet but repairing could be quite difficult because most of the nails are inaccessible. Has anyone had success in installing some other hardwood or laminate flooring material over existing treds? And if so, how did you handle the roundover on the front of the tred?
