Just repaired a wall behind the shower with mildew. Most of the wood was intact but had surface rot. First scrubbed down with bleach water then treated with Jasco Green (termite and wood preserver). Smells like a chemical but once sealed up with paint and then new walls the smell is gone. Of course I let it dry for a week first. It does air out after a few weeks and now don't smell it at all. I bought it at Home Depot. It's recommended for outdoor use where wood either comes in contact with or is near the foundation but apparently it's ok here. Check on that for yourself though before using.
