Bathroom Tiling

I would like to do an inexpensive update of my bathroom. I am planning to rip out the tile on the floor and the walls and install new tile myself.

I live in a 1940s coop. My concerns are:

1) I do not know what is behind the existing tile
2) I have never done this before (however, I did lay lineoleum in my kitchen.

Can anyone offer any tips? Also, do any of you experienced "do it yourselfers" think that I am up to the task.
