removing plaster

My wife and I purchased an older home (circa 1915). Some of the plaster walls are in horrific condition (cracked, separating from the lathe). We have decided to remove the sections of plaster that can not be repaired. Are their any health hazards (asbestos) or special precautions to take to remove this plaster??
