I laid 13" ceramic tile over an existing linoleum floor and have not had any trouble for 2 years now. I did use thinset and galvanized 2" nails to first put down 1/4" cement backer board (WonderBoard) before installing the tiles. As long as the flooring is properly prepared there is no reason to remove the existing linoleum.
