I painted mine with craft type acrylic paint and coated with 5 coats of oil base poly. Let each coat cure very well before putting another one on top. Looks great. Also have another friend who did hers like that only used water base poly. and that was over 4 years ago and it is still holding up wonderful. She used a gloss and I used satin.
You have to watch setting heated containers on the surface.
