I hear you. We recently had our roof completely re-shingled and we also live in the same area as yourself. From what our contractor explained to us, we went with fibreglass vs. ashphalt. It was the underly and the way in which the shingles were applied that we were told was the important factor. Our contractor used ice and water shield on almost the entire roof area of our house because of the pitch and brutal weather. Some roofers will only use a paper type underlay which we were told is not as good, so be careful and ask ALOT of questions ... there's some real bandits out there! The other thing you might want to consider is the number and type of roof vents which you will want to use to make sure there is adequate ventilation. There are electric vents, turbine vents and the recently popular ridge vents. Ask your contractor all of these questions as to what they are going to be using, how far up they will be installing the ice and water shield, etc. etc. :)
