I would just use some spackle compound. It is easy to spread and inexpensive. Should be able to do a 1" hole easilly. You will need a putty knife with a 2" blade or larger.
Hmmmm.... on second thought, there does need to be something behind the hole. Let me know if the hole is deeper than 1/2 - 1"
