basement with trap door??

Hello all, It's been a while since I've visited the board, so I hope I can get some of that great advice once more... We're in the design process of a small 20 x 20, 2 story house that's currently planned to be built on slab. I'd love to add a basement for 1 or 2 extra rooms, and was wondering if we can put in a "trap door" of sorts for access, instead of full staircase. Reason being, we were planning to use the closet under the stairs for an apartment size washer/dryer and broom closet, and I'd hate to use the basement for that. For the "trap door," I'd like it to blend with the flooring and open right up to a small simple staircase. Has anyone heard of or done this sort of thing? What should we be careful of or add to this idea? And as I live in Southeast Texas where basements are few and far between, would I be adding a significant cost to the construction?
