sump pump installation

Have a craw space that gets water told need a pump. Purchased 4" flexable pipe with slits and pump well. How do I know where to put it? What needs to go in the trench with the pipe? Don't I use hard pipe for out-put line? Lots of questions but we have never tackled this kind of project before. Is there any thing else we should know? Thanks :) Cheri
