BACKFILLING COPPER WATER MAIN FROM METER TO HOUSE

I am replacing 50 ft of water line from my meter to my house. The old line was PVC and I am replacing it with copper. My question is what to backfill with pee-gravel, sand or what? The soil is plastic-clay and I do not want it to settle and pull my joints apart. Can anybody input? Thanks!!
