cracks in plaster walls

I tried this a few years ago. I ended up with a huge hole in my ceiling which we had to remove and replace. When I tried to screw into the plaster it just broke. Any ideas what I could have done differently? It seemed like a good idea at the time but now my husband won't let me near a crack in the plaster.
