If you are going to the effort, do it right and spend the extra $400.00 to put down backer board.
You didn't mention how big the floor(?) was. If it is in a bathroom then definately put down backer board. You take your chances putting tile down over plywood, as Mongo said they expand at differnt rates. I for one learned the hard way.
