How do you protect veneer?

I just purchased some nice cherry night stands. They are partial wood/partial veneer. I have a cat that scratched the top - so I believe the top of the stand is veneer. The cat is groomed regularly (not an issue with nails). Do you know of a way to protect the top of the veneer from scratches? I'd appreciate ANY response, even if no. Thanks.
