have some exterior plugs installed that are water proof and with those little spring loaded doors to protect them.

Genny, the builder did do you a disfavor in not having exterior recepticles. You will be doing this every year and fighting the same situation. If you have a recepticle on the interior walls of an exterior wall, a simple procedure can bridge that socket to a new one outside.

This will make things soooo easier for you in the future in Christmas and lawn maintenance and all needs.
