Venting for Gas cook top

Iam a contractor,I have friends that are going to remodel there kitchen,they had contractors give bids,One item I have a problem with is the venting of the gas cook top and new gas oven,there going to remove a wall between the dining room and kitchen area,the stove will be located on this wall,it will become a half wall or pony wall,Now, one contractor said the stove does not need a vent,because the new stoves have a automatic pilot,he said it does not need a vent.Is this OK,i always thought u need a exhaust hood or vent for gas appliances,can sombody explain.there will not be any cabinets above the stove.
