On the page http://www.bobvila.com/WRCLAext.html They talk about finishes for Western Red Cedar siding. From a subsequent page they have a link to the Western Red cedar association. There I found install instructions for my siding http://www.cofi.org/WRCLA/ics/bevel.htm On this page they recommend face nailing the siding for proper installation. I would like to put on a transparent or semi-transparent finish. What should I putty the nail holes with so it will look right? I figure my options are 1) use an exterior putty that will accept the stain/finish 2) Use a colored plastic type putty that will match the finish when I'm done.
On Bob's 1/2 cape to full cape conversion project they used a while looking putty and then put a solid color stain over it. I plan to keep things pretty natural so this wouldn't work.
