replacing a 4-wire (3-speed) fan switch

I just recently tried to replace a 4-wire (3-speed)
ceiling fan switch in two of my fans. The plastic necks
had broken on the old switches, making it hard to pull
the chain.

After installing the new switches, the fans wouldn't turn
at all. I have tried the swithes at all speeds
and even went out and purchased another pair of swithes,
thinking the first ones I bought may have been defective.
The fans still won't turn.

Am I missing something here? I am really stumped.

Any help is appreciated.
