I've seen them with just holes in the floor (in a closet) above the laundry area. I've seen square ducts (like for heating) used to direct the laundry down. I'm putting one in a 2nd story bathroom. Putting a small door in the wall with duct-work running down to a closet that is near the laundry room. Give us an idea of what you have to work with (location of rooms, etc) and maybe we can help more.
