Hi again Linda Ok, now I've got the picture. Here's what you want to do
Use straight paint thinner, apply to the stuck on pad with a brush and let it set. Wet it but don't drown it. Then use a stiff blade putty knife and firmly scrape it up...should come right off as a kind of gooey mess. Althoug thinner is usually not too much of a health hazard, be sure to keep the area ventillated while you are doing this. The places where this old rubber pad typically sticks is on high traffic areas and areas where sunlight and heated air from wall registers have hit the carpet over the years. It'll take a while, but with patience you should be able to get it all up.
