My freezer does this periodically

and they tell me to unplug the unit, let it stand for a minute or two, then plug it back in and the timer MAY reset.

It does sound like a faulty timer that has frozen in the freeze mode.

If you are handy and know where that timer is, you can also turn it to see if it will unstick.

Just an idea, but this happens to me freezer once in a while.
