Yep, sounds like you had a chance to have a ridge vent put in and elected not to. That's not contractors fault. If I'm not mistaken code calls for 1 sqft roof vent per 300 sqft attic space. However, contractors usually double that to 1sqft/150sqft attic space. Looks like you are undervented.
