Hardwood Floor Substrate(s)

My hardwood floors are in very bad shape & I want to replace them. Also, I need to raise the floor a little (1/2 to 1 inch).

I'm thinking of installing prefinished hardwood laminate, but I'm open to other products... (I'm not considering chipboard-backed laminate.)

The main question:
Can I install right over the existing hardwood floor? It's pretty flat - just scratched beyond saving.

If I choose flooring other than laminate is the answer different?
