Scott is exactly correct. The closer the attic temp is to the outside temp, the less likely for ice dams to form. I live in the upper Midwest, and the homes that have a lot of snow melt off of their roofs as compared to the other houses around them are always the ones with poor attic ventilation. The amount of insulation is secondary. If an attic is sealed up, it doesn't make any difference how much insulation there is, the attic is going to warm up and cause the snow to melt resulting in ice dams. That is why I'm so much for continuous soffit and ridge vents. Dodgeman
