If you have a popcorn ceiling that has never been painted, the texture will probably come off with a roller. If you touch the ceiling and the texture starts comming off, it will come off with the paint roller. I spray all my ceilings. Prep work is plastic and tape. If you have any other surface, rolling is OK.
