Sounds like the seal under the commode is leaking just enough for the smell. I have experienced the same one time. Took several years to finally discover just enough stain on ceiling below to realize what was wrong.
A special build up is made to fit below the commode seal to bring it up high enough for a tight fit. Wish you luck!
