When a new asphalt driveway is laid, it's best to leave your shoes outside for about a week. Of course, a new driveway will retain some stickiness until it hardens a bit from being out in the hot days and cool nites. After that first week, unless the contractor uses a really soft mix, there's no problem. In short, I suggest you ask each bidder what they recommend in terms of not wearing your shoes indoors. My contractor suggested a week. I have brand new soft-blue carpets and this was a concern for us. 3 years later, there's no sign of anything from the driveway on the carpets.

As far as re-surfacing, I'd wait the same. Again, ask the contractor. If you're resurfacing yourself, ctc the manufacturer or see what it says on the container. Best to ya and hope this helps. I did post a follow-up to Rob's follow-up. He wanted some clarification on my 'points'.
