Degrees of Tile Thinset

I'm bonding ceramic tile to concrete. The scoop I heard
is that if the concrete is porous then use one type of
thinset. If it is sealed, then use another type. Can
anyone confirm this, and what the types are? I'm told
to ascertain porosity by pouring some water on and
seeing if it soaks in. Your thoughts appreciated. Carl
