Mary! It's amazing - I am in the same situation exactly, except it's my bedroom walls that are a mess. I found that I could peel off not only the paint, but the first layer of wallpaper with my bare hands and a small putty knife for the sticky spots. I suggest you just go to it - it's very liberating to peel off that old chalky paint! For what is left, the advice I received was just using a damp sponge and putty knife as you would with normal wallpaper removal. Have fun!
