Scott, I tried the method you mentioned. It works well but it not only removes the old paint but also the brass (colored) paint from the hinge. It does an excellent job but I end up with a nice bright silver polished hinge.

So far it looks like I might have to invest in new hardware, but in the meantime you all have been a lot of help. tks
