try to put a standard height door in another section of the wall if possible

that would be the easiest solution and you can get the best insulated attic access. hide the door behind some moveable piece of furniture or shelf if considered unsightly. best of luck post back with what you decided to do. sorry I could not help much like you wanted! LJ
