Hi Nikki, the polyurethane that they suggested and you used, did it say anything on the can about being a Spar poly??? For exterior applications you need a good Spar (designed for the elements), this can either be a Helmsman Spar Poly, or a Spar Varnish. They'll both take a recommended minimum of 3 coats for handling the weather, but if it in direct contact with the weather (including sun), I'd go for 4-5 coats.
