At long last, I began the project to refinish all the wood in my kitchen. I have been so delighted to find
the family history tied into my old family homestead. The flooring is maple/curly maple, the doors/windows
and their frames are heartpine. The house was completed in 1915, and the first coat of paint it saw was around 1945.
After the paint was stripped off, I still had to sand down 30 years of shelac/sealer, wood smoke, kitchen grease, and
just general living gunk! The cabinets were made on location around 1930 and are solid maple. My mother had them painted with
what I will "fondly" term a nuclear avacado green. With new ceiling tiles, light fixtures, a fan, and the walls
painted the wood is beautiful! All the hard work of stripping and sanding is worth it to see this irreplaceable wood.
I could not imagine having it any other way but with a few coats of poly on it!
