granite tile kitchen countertops

Does anyone have any experience with granite tile
countertops? I'm considering them because the tile is
so much cheaper than slabs, but I imagine they
will have to be applied to a specially prepared surface,
and the labor for the edging would be considerable. I
can't get an answer from the homestores on these
components of the process, so I can't get a sense of
whether the tile will really be a savings. What's your
experience?
