painted kitchen cabinets

My new house has baby blue factory sprayed custom cabinets. I want to change the color to a darker blue and I don't want a perfect finish. I was thinking about applying a dark blue stain and wiping as I go but was'nt sure if stain would adhere to the paint. What are your suggestions on using another paint then somehow wiping it back off to try to get the effect I want.
