I refinished 1000 sq feet of pine and oak flooring 13 months ago. I was told by a few people that polyurethane was the way to go. I did not mind the extra time to dry or the smell, as I camped out in my backyard for a week. I do wonder what the deal is w/ the "yellow" effect that people mention. I have never seen this, and have seen many old homes w/ the original finish still on the wood. Does this occur from the sun or from wear and tear.
