Removal of indoor/outdoor carpet

Removed indoor/outdoor carpet, but it was on the floor for so many years the backing is stuck, trying to use vingar and water to strip, working but at a very slow pace, any suggestions, have asthma so really don't want to use something that could be harmful to my breathing.
