craftsman garage door opener

my garage door opener is erratic. sometimes the door goes all the way down when the button is pushed, other times it starts to go down and stops and other times it goes down about a foot and goes back up again. I've checke to see if anthing is in the way. should it be replaced or am i overlooking something.
