Proper impact wrench operation

Now that I've gotten past the compressor question, I'd
like to learn something before snapping a few nuts/bolts.
First, the impact wrench I have is rated at 25-400 ft/lbs
of torque. It has one reverse setting that I assume
operates at maximum torque. It has three generic
forward settings: 1, 2, 3. The instructions say to
tighen a nut down. Use the wrench on the lowest setting.
Then increase the setting as the nut continues to turn. I'm not afraid of my first upcoming use. I need to work
on a 1 1/4" nut that needs 250 ft/lbs of torque. I don't
picture to much opporunity to snap it. However, what
about a 1/2" or 13/16" nut.
