When I am making a drastic color change I will slightly tint the primer to help me get to that color faster and to build a good base for my finish paint. I don't like to make it too much like the finish color because sometimes I cannot see where I have painted and what has to be painted.
Just don't mix a oil tint to a latex primer and make sure this is done by your local paint dealer and not yourself unless you do know what your doing.
