Hanging mirrors, shelves, pictures on plaster walls

We just purchased a 75 year old colonial in Baltimore, MD. I have a couple of heavy mirrors and pictures that I'd like to hang. I don't understand the mechanics of plaster walls - are there studs to look for? What is the best type of hanger to use for these heavier pieces? Can I hang where there isn't a stud? HELP!
