Steve, the spring "tubes" are visible without wall work. They reside in the channel between sliding window and the channel it slides up and down in. In fact, I have readily removed a "spring tube" and this is how I knew of the corkscrew details inside. I am far from knowledgeable in this area but because I had easy access to this "tube", I was hoping replacement or repair was engineered into the design. Your response makes it sound as if the springs may be behind the frame in the wall. Perhaps I simply don't understand your response but the entire mechanism is accessible with the removal of one sheet metal screw. Does this change your opinion? Thank you for your time.
