My husband conferred with his father last night and determined that it may be stoppage in the drain vent pipe. He went up on the roof and poured a whole bottle of drain opener into the drain vent pipe. The water is no longer standing in the sinks, and it appears that may have been the problem. Hopefully that will take care of it for good. Thanks for your suggestions and questions!
