I'm looking for suggestions for finding studs in the ceiling of old porches. I'm trying to hang a porch swing on our house and can't seem to find the studs. It's an old arts-and-crafts style house built in 1916. The porch ceiling is made of narrow tongue-and-groove slats that run perpendicular to the house. The porch has a pitched roof, and the ends of the joists extend out under the eaves. I thought the ceiling joists might line up with them, but when I drilled in line with one of the ends of the joists I didn't hit any. I tried using a stud finder, but that didn't work. And I could make out any nail heads in the ceiling, which has been painted many times. Any suggestions?
