When the carpenter nails t & G the nail is driven at the base of the tounge. In attempting to get that nail down as far as possible before using a set they sometimes dented that exposed corner or edge with that final hammer blow. I've dedected joists by finding these subtle dents. . . .maybe only two or three per run. Of course, this may not be of any help if you had a great carpenter.
