A few thoughts... I know it's been done, have talked to a few old timers who have done it, but... 1. lots of work that has to be done by hand. 2. dirt has to be carried out, mostly by hand. 3. Biggest issue: likely your foundation doesn't extend down to where you want to go. It would have to be shored up, dig it out then extend the foundation. Is it really worth that?
