Thank you so much Steve. I really did read a lot of articles before I started--proving once again there is no substitute for hands-on experience. I don't think I sanded against the grain, but maybe I did. I have now bought 100 grit sandpaper to use with a finishing sander. (The areas to be sanded are fairly narrow--a few inches--and I don't have a belt sander. I managed to do all this damage even without one) Is that the right approach? Would a lower or higher number be better? (The mantle is off the wall but still pretty much put together.)
